About Dermal Fillers

What are Dermal Fillers?

As the skin ages, it loses collagen and fat. This causes the skin to sag and develop lines. Hyaluronic acid plays an important part in moisturizing the skin and returning its elasticity and tone. Fillers work with the body’s own hyaluronic acid to smooth, filling and plumping out lines.

Are Dermal Fillers FDA Approved?

It has been over 20 years since the approval of the first dermal filler, with the majority of the currently marketed dermal fillers approved in the last 10 years. The types of materials approved for dermal fillers vary from biologic to synthetic materials and absorbable to non-absorbable compounds. Some dermal fillers formulations are available with lidocain to reduce pain during injection.

Dermal fillers are, in general, approved for injection into the mid to deep dermis for the correction of moderate to severe wrinkles and folds. Available, published literature suggests that dermal fillers are increasingly used to augment and contour tissues, in addition to improving the appearance of wrinkles.

Are Hyaluronic Acid Dermal Fillers a Safe Anti-aging Treatment?

The dermal fillers use a specially formulated type of Hyaluronic acid (HA) that exists naturally in your own skin. The ability of fillers to integrate with surrounding tissue allows free passage of elements like oxygen and hormones. HA will moisturize your skin from the inside giving it elasticity and tone.

This results in natural, healthy-looking skin. Over time they are broken down by our own normal biological processes and removed from the body.

Who Are Good Candidates for Dermal Fillers?

Most candidates have a desire to eliminate some wrinkles and fine lines on their face. You may worry about crow’s feet around your eyes, frown lines near your eyebrows, and forehead creases, to name the most common issues. Fortunately, using injectables, is the right procedure for you if you suffer from any of these problems, and recognizing this is the first step to being an ideal candidate.

Once you decide that you want this procedure, you will visit with a doctor, who should discuss how it works. During that time, it will be determined if this treatment is indeed right for you. You will need to show that you have realistic expectations. This means that you cannot expect your whole life to change for the better when you get this treatment but you can expect at least most of your wrinkles and lines to go away.

As with any other surgery, you should be in good health before you undergo this procedure. Additionally, you should have generally good skin that is not drooping or damaged by the sun.
If your goal is to get rid of fine lines and wrinkles without undergoing surgery, and you are tired of relying on face creams that do not work, dermal fillers may be right for you.
